Abijah Franklin, a 6’5 combo guard, committed to Furman on Sept. 28th out of Wren High School in South Carolina. Franklin is a huge pickup for the Paladins, as he’s currently the reigning 3A Player of the Year for South Carolina. He plays AAU hoops for a prestigious program in Raleigh NC, Garner Road, which has produced NBA players like John Wall, TJ Warren, and Devonte Graham. Abijah’s teams have known success, with Wren going 25-6 last year and 10-0 in conference. He’ll fit perfectly into the high standards of Bob Richey and the Furman program.
Abijah has a unique blend of length and speed, which will translate well into the SoCon. He has the height to shoot over smaller guards, but is also able to work his way to the rim. The versatility his length provides could allow him to play out on the wing alongside guards like Eddrin Bronson, or run the offense himself. It is evident that he can score consistently at all levels, averaging 23.4 PPG his junior year on a mix of threes, deep drives and pull-ups. It will be hard for Franklin to come into the game and not make an impact, whether with his shooting or distributing. On top of these guard skills, Franklin establishes himself on the glass even coming off the perimeter averaging 6.9 rebounds last year.
Abijah should be able to establish himself on the defensive end, with his wingspan allowing him to hawk down guards as well as matchup evenly with similarly sized wings. He is certainly someone Furman fans should be excited for in the future, as he is a legitimate candidate to carve out a role as a freshman. Franklin chose Furman over Wofford, James Madison, BC, and App State among others, showing that the Furman program has not lost its luster on the recruiting trail. Franklin will be a part of the first team to play in a newly renovated Timmons Arena, and could help make that season a memorable one. His dunks should help christen the new rims as well.
